Graphic Design
I started doing graphic design 7 years ago when I was asked to make a logo for the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race that was to be hosted in Winnipeg in February of 2002. I didn't really know much about anything so I experimented and was pretty bad at it. I received a lot of help early on from James Eichele a good friend of my and a nut at photoshop.
I eventually learned how to become fluent in the entire Adobe line, especially Adobe Illustrator. It has now become a staple of anything I do on a computer and I find it rather difficult to complete any project without using Illustrator.
I should also mention that having any skill in graphic design is rather pointless unless you have a forum to use them. This is were pet projects come in very handy. I've had various opportunities to learn web design making various websites including the one you are reading now. I'm a big Macromedia Dreamweaver fan but I can hardcode it when the need arises.
Lastly, the forum I probably enjoy most is that of printed material. In particular large scale book projects such as yearbooks or as I found out last summer, the U of M Engineering Engenda. There's something about having your work on hardcopy that just feels good. For this stuff, I use Adobe InDesign since that's what it is made for.
